Describe the characters in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Everyday Use”.

For the purposes of this exam, you can assume that the reader has read the texts. 1. Explore narration in Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado” and Walker’s “Everyday Use”. What kind of narrators are used? How do they affect their stories? What are the similarities and/or differences in the way narration affects these two short stories? Would the stories be as effective if told using a different narrative style? 2. What is the setting for the Cask of Amontillado? Does it change? How so? How does the setting affect the plot or the action of the characters? Does the setting create a particular mood or atmosphere? Be specific and refer to details from the text. 3. Describe and trace the setting in “Everyday Use”. Does it change? Use specific examples. Are there points in the story where a particular location becomes important to the author? What mood is created and how? 4. Describe the characters in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “Everyday Use”. What are their motivations? Do some of the characters exhibit odd characteristics? Are they convincing? How do the characters in these two stories compare?
