Learning Goal: I’m working on a social science writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.OverviewIn the first weeks of class we have discussed several different moral frameworks or moral theories. These include the moral theories from the Timmons reading, a couple of which (consequentialism and deontology) the instructor explicated in lecture. They also include the views of distribution of property and fairness from the Wolf reading and two different conceptions of legal discrimination in the Barocas and Selbst reading. In your first paper you will apply one of these to an article of your choosing about data or algorithms of your choosing. The goal of the paper is to take an article about data or algorithms and explain how it illustrates one of the views we have discussed. NOTE: this is a lot like your SADIEs, but substantially more involved.Choose one specific issue involving data collection, analysis, or use or some algorithmic system that interests you. Find an extensive, in-depth article about that technology and its importance. Next, either determine what theory your target article helps illustrate, or use one of theories to analyze the target article. Your paper should demonstrate both your understanding of the moral theory and your careful reading of the article you’ve chosen. You can use more than one target article, if you need multiple articles to fully explain the data or algorithm. However, the point is not to gather lots of different material. The point is(a) careful, efficient, terse explanation, (b) narrow, thorough explanation of the moral theory, and (c) explicit connection of (a) and (b). Note: these are precisely the skills you’ve been developing in memos and in SADIEs.Here’s an example of an introduction to a paper of this sort:”In ‘Targeted (Links to an external site.),’ McCrory et al describe an algorithmic system developed and deployed by the Pasco County, FL Sheriff’s department. The system purported to anticipate criminal activity before it happened. It was used to hassle people regardless of whether they were engaged in criminal activity. I will argue that this use of a technology is unjustified because it is rights violating, drawing on Timmons’ account of deontological ethics.”The paper would go on to explicate the article, explain Timmons’ account of deontology, and argue that Timmons’ account provides a reason to think that it is unjustifiable to use the algorithmic system in the way described by the article.Specific guidelinesThe paper should be between about1500 words (roughly 5 pages).
Begin with a short introductory paragraph (less than one-third of a page). It should have a clear thesis that explains what the paper is about. For example, “I will argue that this use of a technology is unjustified because it is rights violating, drawing on Timmons’ account of deontological ethics.”
In about a page you should explain your target article in sufficient depth to support your thesis.
In 1-1.5 pages you should explain framework you are drawing on. Use only the readings for this course in your explanation. Make sure that you explain the view in your own words. Don’t simply quote the readings. The point is to show you understand the views.
In the next 1-1.5 pages explain how the target article (described in 3) illustrates the framework(described in 4) or how the framework (described in 4) provides a justification for or reason against the data collection, use, or analysis or the algorithmic system you describe in the 3.
There is no need for a conclusion in a paper this short.
Make sure you provide adequate citation to your sources.
Some Specifics:Use normal fonts (if you have any doubt, use Times New Roman 12pt).
Double space the paper.
Use normal margins (1 inch all the way around).
Use the Chicago Manual of Style citation style.
Do not use passive voice. (“Passive voice will not be used.”)
Do not use rhetorical questions. (“Aren’t rhetorical questions annoying?”)
Do not use analogies. (“Analogies are like COVID, in that they should be avoided. Aren’t they?”)
I encourage you to use the Writing Center for help with drafts.
Edit. Edit againGradingYou will be evaluated according to the following criteria:Following instructions. Does your paper follow the instructions of the assignment? Was it turned in on time? Does it conform to our formatting guidelines?
Grammar and style. Do you avoid grammatical, spelling, and usage errors? Do you have any run-on sentences or non-sentences? Are your sentences clear and concise? Are references in a standard style?
Thesis and structure. Does your introduction contain a clear thesis? Do your discussions of your target article and view of technology fit together?
Use of sources. Does your paper demonstrate that you understand the sources you use? Does your thesis deal with the central arguments rather than peripheral issues?
Arguments and evidence. Do you support your thesis with compelling evidence and arguments.
