LESSON FOUNDATION Lesson Title: Healthy Hands Lesson Number w/in Unit: Unit Title: Grade Level(s): KIndergarten Time Allotted: 30 minutes Subject Area(s)/Subject Content Explanation: Standard(s)/Anchors: 10.2.K.A1 Identify fundamental practices for good health Essential Question(s): How does washing your hands with soap kill germs? Why is washing your hands important to keeping the community safe? Instructional Objective(s): Given a demonstration on how to properly wash your hands, kindergarten students will be able to explain the steps to washing your hands in no more than 7 steps. Given a demonstration on how to properly wash your hands, kindergarten students will be able to demonstrate on their own how to properly wash their hands, not going under 30 seconds. Formative Assessment: After the teacher explains the steps to washing your hands, they will ask their students to give a thumb or down after each step is explained to make sure each student knows how to complete each step. The teacher will be able to make things clearer for students by seeing if a lot of students put their thumbs down Summative Assessment: Children will be handed out a worksheet that has photos of the 7 steps to washing your hands on it. Students will be asked to number each picture 1-7 in the correct order. II. LESSON BODY INTRODUCTION: A process to engage/activate student learning, interest and prior knowledge. This activity and instruction relate the experiences of the students to the objectives of the lesson. An “Instructional Set” may include a motivational device, connection to prior learning and real-life experiences, relevance to future learning, stated connection to instructional objective and academic standards or the essential questions to be addressed in lesson. This may involve modeling, use of prompt hierarchies and use of key discussion questions to stimulate thought and provoke inquiry. *Independent Practice – Explicitly and sequentially describe the opportunities provided to students to practice and apply skills independently. This provides a platform for formative assessment practices and connection to lesson objectives. CLOSURE: A process designed to bring a lesson presentation to an appropriate conclusion. Used to help students bring things together in their own minds, to use, apply and extend what has just been taught. The lesson summary includes a review of central lesson concepts and/or essential questions, a preview of future learning, an application to daily living or an expansion/extension of concept. III.LESSON ESSENTIALS DIFFERENTIATED LEARNING ACTIVITIES: As an alternative to explaining the steps to washing your hands and to the matching worksheet students will be given the option to demonstrate how to wash their hands by going to a sink and washing their hands by following all the steps they just learned in front of the teacher.
