What did you gain by reading and responding to your peer’s post?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a discrete math question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.General Discussion Instructions Please review the current discussion topic/question and post your initial response by Noon Central time on Thursday Week 8, and remember to respond to at least two (2) other classmates’ posts no later than Noon Central time on Monday Week 9. Your response must have a clear, well formulated idea; and sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling count. Your response should be insightful, thoughtful, and analytical. Initial discussion posts do not necessarily have a correct answer. They are left vague to encourage discussion and differences between answers. Creating thoughtful initial posts and replies is essential to building a community of learners. Initial Post Consider the missing dollar riddle: Three guests check into a hotel room. The manager says the bill is \$30, so each guest pays \$10. Later the manager realizes the bill should only have been \$25. To rectify this, he gives the bellhop \$5 as five one-dollar bills to return to the guests. On the way to the guests’ room to refund the money, the bellhop realizes that he cannot equally divide the five one-dollar bills among the three guests. As the guests are not aware of the total of the revised bill, the bellhop decides to just give each guest \$1 back and keep \$2 as a tip for himself, and proceeds to do so. As each guest got \$1 back, each guest only paid \$9, bringing the total paid to \$27. The bellhop kept \$2, which when added to the \$27, comes to \$29. So if the guests originally handed over \$30, what happened to the remaining \$1? Try to unravel this riddle. Where is the missing dollar? (I promise I did not make the money disappear!) Construct a proof showing where the money is. Response Posts Your response to your classmate’s posting must be approximately 100 words; and be thoughtful, substantial, and polite – not just a “well done” phrase or “I agree.” In this discussion, your response posts should address: Similarities and differences in responses. What did you gain by reading and responding to your peer’s post? Did you identify the same sums? Several different sums are possible. Estimated time for completion: 20 minutes for initial post and 10 minutes for replies to classmates
