What instruments are being played?

Learning Goal: I’m working on a music multi-part question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.Music Culture Lecture Assignment
Due February 17th at 3:40
(Submitted online via Blackboard “Assignments”)
Write a 2-page (double-spaced) write-up that details all that is going on during a
live musical event. This can be based on your personal experience of a live music
event, and/or based off of online video of a live event (NOT a music video, i.e. the
performance should not be edited together from multiple video shoots). If you do choose
a video, please include a link to the video in your write-up.
This does not need to be written in an essay structure, but more of a
free-write-up. The goal of this exercise is for you to expand your notion of the details
that constitute a musical event.
Full credit can be earned for submitting this assignment with the proper page length.
This should be uploaded to Blackboard under the Assignments section on the left-hand
side of the Course Menu.
1. The first paragraph should serve as an introduction to the musical event. You
should include an introductory description of what is going on at the event.
Here are some prompts to get you started. Remember that the more varied your
details are, the better. Note: You do not have to answer each and every question,
but you should write commentary based on each section. Each section is marked
in italics.
Sonic element
What instruments are being played?
How would you define the singing component of the music, if there is any?
Is there a solo singer, or a chorus singer?
Is there call and response?
Social element
Observations about social interactions happening at events
What kind of audience interactions are you seeing?
Is the audience singing along?
Is the audience dancing, or sitting in place?
Are the musicians talking to one another? What might be some common phrases you can overhear at this event?
Is the audience quiet?
Are members of the audience talking with each other?
Do most audience members know each other from before?
What is the emotional impact/affect of the event? What emotions does the
audience/performers experience during the event/because of the event?
Description of the demographics of the audience based on your “best guess.” This
might include: how many people were there, gendered identities/sexual distribution,
ethnicities, age range and distribution, religious affiliation, affluence/class (based off of
clothing, dialects, or other markers)
What demographics do the audience come from?
What demographics do the performers come from?
Age, ethnicity, gender, etc.?
Materiality and physicality of the event
Is there an electronic sound system that is being used?
Are there chairs? Is there a stage? Is there a balcony? Are the audience all in
one area? Try to describe the layout of the event
Visual observations of the people at the event. This might include clothing, smartphone
use during the event, the dances people were doing, or movement done by “musicians”.
Are members of the audience videotaping or photographing the event?
Questions
You must conclude this write-up by asking any questions that arose in your thought
process during your write-up. This can be questions that can be answered quickly, such
as a quick question that the musician can answer in a few sentences, or it can be a
question that would require more in-depth research to answer.
