Pentadic Analysis (about 1 page) Begin with one or more passages from the speech. Select and quote the passages. Identify at least two out of five pentadic terms in your selected passage: Act, Scene, Agent, Agency, and Purpose Make a claim about a ratio: i.e. which of the two terms is dominant, or which of the two terms helps to define the other term Elaborate and argue for the ratio you just singled out. Why? What are the consequences of that ratio. What does that say about the “philosophical motivations,” of the rhetor, about their view of the world. Part III. Rhetorical Situation Analysis (about 1-2 pages) Identify the three components of the rhetorical situation: Exigence: What is the exigencein the rhetorical situation you are presenting? Audience: Who are the audiences?Who are stakeholders in the situation that has created the need for the rhetoric? What motivates or prevents them from taking action? Constraints: What are the constraintson what can be known, said, acted upon? (for example: cultural expectations, institutional rules, traditions, historical contexts, etc. ) Briefly evaluate and analyze the rhetorical situation and the way it was presented in this speech. Paper should be double spaced. Include references in-text and at the end (any style is okay –APA, Chicago, etc– as long as you are consistent.
